Learn the Sky was created by Janine Bonham, a high school teacher with a passion to share her knowledge about the stars across the globe. Her hope is to encourage others to go outside, observe the night sky and share their experience with others. Exploring space is already one of the future scientific frontiers, and learning the basics of sky motions and astronomy concepts are the first steps to developing global scientific literacy and preserving our natural world.
Janine is currently teaching astronomy, biology and marine science in a public charter school located in Hawaii. For the past decade, she has made it her mission to become an expert of the stars by learning about their stories and how to find the star patterns in the sky. The Big Island of Hawai'i boasts some of the darkest and clearest nights and hosts a robust astronomy community, making the ideal spot to learn and explore the skies. Currently she is focusing her studies on learning more about wayfinding, how to use the Hawaiian Star Compass, and how ancient Polynesian voyagers used the sky to navigate the seas.
Outside of work, Janine is a mother, sci-fi nerd, pet owner of two kitties, and a SCUBA diver.
